Niphon, a monk from Mount Athos, was chosen Patriarch despite his attempts to hide from the delegation seeking him. He reluctantly accepted, prophesying tribulations. His wisdom impressed Sultan Mehmed II, who initially favored him. However, court intrigues led to his unjust exile and imprisonment. Later reinstated, Niphon faced further opposition and was eventually forced to abdicate. He retired to a monastery, performing miracles until his death.
