In 1821, during the Greek War of Independence, Gregory IV faced immense pressure from the Ottomans due to suspicions of collaboration with the rebels. Despite his denials and efforts to maintain peace, he was arrested and tragically executed at the gates of the Patriarchate in Bucharest. His martyrdom became a symbol of resistance and faith.
