A wealthy merchant, John, was betrayed by a jealous associate to the Tartar governor. Promised riches if he renounced his faith, John refused. He was tortured mercilessly, beaten for hours until his flesh hung in shreds. Yet, he remained steadfast, proclaiming Christ. Enraged, the governor ordered him tied to a horse and dragged through the streets. Finally, his head was severed. Some Christians collected his relics. They shined with light and were fragrant.
