During the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian, Bishop Irineu of Sirmium was arrested. He was brought before the Roman governor and ordered to renounce his faith. The governor promised him riches and power if he would only offer a sacrifice to the Roman gods. Irineu refused, boldly proclaiming his faith in Jesus Christ. The governor, enraged by his defiance, subjected him to brutal torture. Despite the suffering, Irineu remained steadfast. Finally, he was beheaded for his unwavering faith. Saint Irineu, pray to God for us, that we too may remain faithful in the face of trials, and that God's will be done.
