Hieromartyr Irineu, Bishop of Sirmium, fearlessly confessed his faith before Emperor Maximian during persecution. Refusing to offer pagan sacrifices, he declared Christ as his King. Imprisoned and tortured, he remained steadfast, converting many. When asked by the Emperor to offer to the pagan idols he responded “anyone who sacrifices to idols sacrifices to demons”. After further refusal he was beheaded in 304 AD.
