In 1821, as the Greek Revolution erupted, Gregory IV faced immense pressure. The Ottomans suspected the Romanian Orthodox Church of collaboration. Despite the danger, Gregory refused to abandon his flock. He was arrested and brutally executed in Bucharest. His martyrdom became a symbol of resistance and faith, solidifying his place as a protector of the church.
