In the mid-18th century, St. Visarion of Lainici, a Romanian monk, faced persecution for his Orthodox faith under Ottoman rule. Accused of inciting rebellion, he was imprisoned and subjected to torture, yet he remained steadfast in his beliefs. Legend says he was offered wealth and freedom if he converted to Islam, but he refused, choosing death over denying Christ. He was ultimately martyred for his faith.
