Emilian, a humble slave, lived during a time of fierce persecution against Christians. When authorities in Durostorum sought to offer sacrifices to pagan idols, Emilian bravely overturned the altars and smashed the idols. Arrested and brought before the governor, he confessed his faith in Christ without fear. Despite threats and tortures, Emilian refused to renounce Christ. He was sentenced to be burned alive. As the flames consumed him, Emilian offered a prayer of thanksgiving to God, and with joy gave his soul into His hands.
