Martyr John the New, a merchant of Trebizond, was traveling when he was falsely accused of renouncing Christianity by a Venetian merchant. The local governor, out of greed, tortured John to force his conversion to Islam, but John steadfastly refused. He endured horrific beatings, was dragged behind a horse, and finally beheaded in Belgorod. His body was miraculously preserved, and his relics brought healing and comfort to many.
