The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph, in Nazareth. He announced she would conceive and bear a son, Jesus, who would be called the Son of the Most High. Mary, troubled, asked how this could be, as she was a virgin. Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her, and the power of the Most High would overshadow her. Mary humbly accepted, saying, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word."
