Martyr John, a merchant, traveled to Cetatea Alba. A Venetian merchant, being envious of John's success and faith, betrayed him to the Tartar governor. The governor demanded John renounce Christ and embrace their pagan beliefs. John refused steadfastly. Enraged, the governor ordered John to be tortured mercilessly, beaten with clubs until his body was a bloody mess. Still, John would not renounce Christ. Finally, he was beheaded. His body was then dragged through the city streets by a horse.
