In the 18th century, Saint Venerable Martyr Gherasim of Tismana, a humble monk, stood firm against the forceful attempts of the Austrian army to convert Orthodox Romanians to Catholicism. Imprisoned and tortured for his unwavering faith, he refused to renounce Orthodoxy. He was eventually martyred, defending the traditions and beliefs of his people.
