Saint John the Valachian, a Romanian soldier in Ottoman service, refused to convert to Islam. Lured with promises, then threatened, he remained steadfast in his Christian faith. Repeatedly tortured, he was eventually beheaded in Constantinople on May 12, 1662, uttering, "I am a Christian, and I die a Christian."
