Niphon, a monk from Mount Athos, was chosen as Patriarch of Constantinople. Known for his strict monastic lifestyle, he initially refused the position, feeling unworthy. After accepting, he fearlessly confronted Emperor Andronicus II Palaiologos for immoral behavior. Niphon refused to concelebrate the liturgy with the emperor until he repented. This act of courage and commitment to righteousness led to his exile, but it also cemented his legacy as a defender of moral integrity. May we all be as brave in upholding our faith.
Pray for Niphon’s guidance in standing firm for truth.
