In the 18th century, Saint Venerable Martyr Gherasim of Tismana, a monk of profound faith, lived near Tismana Monastery. During a time of upheaval, bandits raided the monastery, seeking its treasures. Gherasim, protecting the holy place, confronted them. Refusing to reveal the monastery's secrets, he was brutally tortured and beheaded by the impious raiders. His martyrdom became a testament to his unwavering devotion.
