Venerable Anthony of Iezeru, born in the early 17th century, renounced worldly life to seek God in the Romanian mountains. He carved a hermitage into the rock at Iezeru, dedicating himself to prayer and fasting. Skilled in calligraphy, he copied and illuminated manuscripts, enriching the spiritual life of the region. His most significant work was re-writing the Romanian Gospels. His dedication led others to seek his guidance, and a monastic community grew around his hermitage.
