St. Andrew, brother of St. Peter, preached the Gospel along the coasts of the Black Sea. Tradition holds that he traveled extensively, spreading the word of Christ in lands that would become Romania, Ukraine, and Russia. It is said that he ordained the first bishop of Byzantium. He was eventually crucified in Patras, Greece, on an X-shaped cross, because he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified in the same manner as Christ.
