Gregory IV, as Metropolitan, faced immense pressure from the Ottoman Empire. In 1737, during the Austro-Turkish War, he was forced to flee Țara Românească alongside Prince Constantine Mavrocordatos. Accused of supporting the Austrians, Gregory was captured by the Turks upon his return. Despite the accusations, he was allowed to return to his throne, but was soon deposed. He died in Bucharest, after a life dedicated to the church and his people.

Lord, may Gregory's example of faith guide us during times of adversity.
