In 1769, during the Russo-Turkish War, Saint Gherasim, abbot of Tismana Monastery, refused to reveal the location of villagers hiding in the surrounding mountains to Turkish soldiers. Enraged, the Turks tortured him, demanding he betray his people. Gherasim remained steadfast, enduring horrific abuse rather than compromise his flock. Finally, they beheaded him within the monastery walls, thus solidifying his martyrdom.
