In 1330, John, a merchant from Trebizond, traveled to Cetatea Albă. A Venetian merchant, angered by John's success and faith, falsely accused him of renouncing Christianity to the Tartar governor. Despite promises of wealth for conversion, John refused to deny Christ. He was brutally tortured: beaten, whipped with ox-hide thongs, and his body was cut to pieces. Unwavering, he continued to profess his faith. Finally, he was beheaded. His relics, emitting a sweet fragrance, were later moved to Suceava, becoming a source of miracles and comfort to the faithful.
