Saint Priest Martyr Alexandru of Basarabia, in 1918, as a deputy in the Country Council, voted for the Union of Basarabia with Romania. Arrested in 1919 by the Bolsheviks for his faith and pro-Romanian stance, he was brutally tortured for three days for refusing to renounce his beliefs. He endured beatings, burns, and mutilation before being drowned in the Dniester River, becoming a martyr for his faith and nation.
