In 1330, John, a merchant from Trebizond, traveled to Cetatea Alba (now in Ukraine). There, a Venetian merchant, jealous of John's success and faith, denounced him as a Christian to the local Tatar governor. John refused to renounce Christ, enduring brutal tortures. He was dragged behind a horse through the city streets until his body was torn to pieces. Even in death, his relics emitted a sweet fragrance, and many miracles occurred where they rested.
O, Martyr John, pray to God for us to stand firm in our faith amidst trials.
