The four holy martyrs, Claudius, Castor, Sempronian, and Nicostratus, were stonemasons by trade, employed by Emperor Diocletian in the construction of pagan temples. Secretly, they were Christians, using their skills to aid the persecuted by carving crosses and other symbols of faith on hidden places. When asked to sculpt a statue of the sun god, they refused, declaring their allegiance to Christ. Enduring imprisonment and torture, they remained steadfast. They were eventually drowned at the bottom of a river.
