The four holy martyrs, Claudius, Castor, Sempronian, and Nicostratus, were stonemasons by trade, employed by the Roman government. Renowned sculptors, they were commissioned to craft a statue of Aesculapius, a pagan deity. As they toiled, they were exposed to the teachings of Christianity and, influenced by the Holy Spirit, they came to believe in Jesus Christ. Refusing to continue the idolatrous work, they openly declared their new faith, for which they were tortured and ultimately martyred.
