Born in Epivat on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, Paraschiva, as a young girl, heard the words of the Lord in church, "Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself." Profoundly moved, she gave away her clothes to the poor. This act, repeated, prompted her parents to send her to Constantinople to live a more conventional life. Instead, she escaped to a monastery, tonsured as a nun. After years of ascetic life, an angel told her to return to her homeland. She lived a life of prayer and fasting, then reposed in the Lord.
