John Cassian, born in Roman Dacia, sought spiritual wisdom in the Egyptian desert. There, he learned from desert fathers about monastic life. Later, in Gaul, he founded monasteries for both men and women near Marseilles, establishing cenobitic life in the West. Cassian authored "Institutes" and "Conferences," offering practical guidance on monastic virtues, prayer, and combating the eight principal vices. His writings influenced Western monasticism, shaping the Rule of St. Benedict.
Holy John Cassian, pray to God for us and guide us on the path to virtue!
