Philotheia of Curtea de Argeș, a young girl of humble origins, was known for her piety and generosity. Her stepmother, however, was cruel and abusive, resenting Philotheia's kindness. One day, while Philotheia was taking food to her father working in the fields, her stepmother intercepted her and, in a fit of rage, killed her. Legend says a miraculous light appeared at the place of her death, and she was later recognized as a saint. Her relics are housed in the Curtea de Argeș Monastery.
