Stephen the Great, a 15th-century ruler of Moldavia, faced a massive Ottoman invasion in 1475 at Vaslui. Outnumbered, Stephen rallied his troops and, through brilliant strategy and faith, crushed the Ottoman army. This victory secured Moldavia's independence and halted Ottoman expansion into Europe for a time, earning him the title "Athlete of Christ" from the Pope.
