Bishop Bretanion of Tomis, in the 4th century, faced Emperor Valens, an Arian, who sought to impose Arianism. When Valens arrived in Tomis, Bretanion refused to commune with the Arian bishop the Emperor brought. During a procession, Bretanion led his flock away from Valens, who was furious and exiled him. However, an angel appeared to Valens in a dream, warning him to restore Bretanion. Valens, frightened by the dream, brought Bretanion back.
