Bishop Bretanion of Tomis faced a unique challenge. During Emperor Valens' reign, who favored Arianism, Bretanion refused to commune with the Arian bishop sent to Tomis. When Valens himself visited the city, expecting Bretanion to yield, the bishop led his flock out of the church in protest, following him across the city. Impressed by Bretanion's steadfast faith and the people's devotion, Valens, despite his Arian beliefs, allowed Bretanion to remain bishop.
