Venerable Sofronie, a simple monk from Cioara, stirred a nation with his fiery defense of Orthodoxy. When the Habsburgs threatened to force Uniates upon the faithful, Sofronie rallied tens of thousands of Romanian peasants in the 1760s. He fearlessly petitioned Empress Maria Theresa, demanding religious freedom. Though imprisoned and his movement suppressed, his unwavering spirit preserved the Orthodox faith in Transylvania.
