In the Roman persecution under Aurelian, Hermes, a Greek serving as a soldier, was denounced as a Christian. Brought before the judge, he confessed his faith openly, renouncing idols. Despite flattery and promises, he remained steadfast. He was stripped, beaten, and subjected to various tortures, including having his eyes gouged out. Miraculously, his sight was restored. Astonished, the judge and many onlookers converted to Christianity. Hermes was eventually beheaded.
