In Nazareth, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to a virgin named Mary, betrothed to Joseph, and announced she would conceive and bear a son, Jesus, by the Holy Spirit. Troubled, she asked how this could be, as she knew no man. Gabriel explained, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God." Mary humbly accepted, saying, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word."
