Hieromartyr Antim the Ivirian, a Georgian by origin, was Metropolitan of Wallachia. Skilled in languages, he established printing presses and spread literacy. In 1716, his defense of the poor against unjust taxes angered Prince Nicholas Mavrocordatos, leading to Antim's exile and death. Accused of treason, he was drowned in the river, becoming a martyr for justice.
