Venerable Nicodim of Tismana, a 14th-century Romanian monk, faced a perilous journey to Mount Athos for monastic training. On his return to Wallachia, he was captured by Tartars. They demanded he renounce his faith, but Nicodim remained steadfast. Enraged, they subjected him to brutal torture, yet he miraculously survived. Witnessing his unwavering faith, the Tartar chieftain and his family converted to Christianity, releasing Nicodim. He then founded the Tismana Monastery, a beacon of faith and culture.
