Saint Priest Martyr Alexandru of Basarabia, during the Bolshevik occupation, refused to stop conducting church services. He openly criticized the atheistic regime and supported his parishioners. Arrested for "anti-Soviet agitation," he was tortured and demanded to renounce his faith, but he refused. On November 21, 1918, he was shot near Balatina.
