Niphon, a humble monk, was chosen as Patriarch of Constantinople. Known for his wisdom, he fearlessly confronted injustice, even rebuking a Wallachian prince for his cruelty. He was then exiled, only to be later begged to return to Wallachia. He became Metropolitan of Ţara Românească.
