Antim the Ivirian, a Georgian captured and enslaved, rose to become a Romanian Orthodox bishop and a prolific writer, establishing the first printing press in Bucharest. His liturgical books and theological works greatly enriched Romanian culture. Accused of treason, he was exiled and murdered on his way to the capital.
