In the late 18th century, as Metropolitan of Țara Românească, Gregory IV faced immense pressure from the Ottoman Empire, which sought to exploit the Romanian lands. Despite the threats, he staunchly defended the rights and spiritual autonomy of his flock. One notable act was when he resisted the Sultan's demand to impose exorbitant taxes on the churches and monasteries. Gregory traveled to Istanbul, risking his life, and through his wisdom and diplomatic skill, managed to negotiate a significant reduction in the financial burden, safeguarding the religious and cultural heritage of his people.
Let us pray that #GregoryIV’s courage inspires us to defend our #faith and help those in need. May his intercession bring us closer to #God and strengthen our resolve to uphold #OrthodoxTradition. #ChurchHistory
