In the 18th century, Saint Venerable Martyr Gherasim of Tismana, a monk known for his piety, was captured by invading Ottomans. Offered wealth and status to convert to Islam, he refused, proclaiming his unwavering faith in Christ. Enraged, the Ottomans subjected him to brutal tortures, but Gherasim remained steadfast, praying for his tormentors. Finally, he was beheaded for his faith near the Tismana Monastery, becoming a symbol of courage and devotion.
