During World War I, when Romanian soldiers were retreating through Sibiu, they intended to blow up the city's powder magazine to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. Metropolitan Elijah Iorest intervened, persuading the military to spare the city. He argued that destroying the magazine would devastate Sibiu and harm its innocent inhabitants. Instead, he proposed moving the gunpowder to a safer location. His plea was heeded, and Sibiu was saved from destruction.

Let us pray that through his intercessions, peace and compassion may prevail in our hearts and in the world.
