Venerable Confessor Sofronie of Cioara, a Romanian monk in the 18th century, fiercely defended the Orthodox faith against the encroaching influence of the Habsburg Empire, which sought to convert Orthodox Christians to Catholicism. When the empire demanded Orthodox clergy sign a document uniting them with Rome, Sofronie refused. He traveled throughout Transylvania, preaching and strengthening the faith of the people. His resistance led to imprisonment, but he remained steadfast, becoming a symbol of unwavering devotion to Orthodoxy.
