In the days of Diocletian, Hermes, a soldier, was imprisoned for his faith. An angel appeared, bearing a shining cross, promising victory if Hermes believed. Strengthened, he confessed Christ before the emperor and won in battle. Witnessing this, 1,100 soldiers converted, and were later martyred alongside Hermes.
