In 1949, as the communist regime intensified its persecution of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Fr. Visarion, abbot of Lainici Monastery, was arrested for defending the faith and resisting the secularization of monastic lands. Subjected to torture and imprisonment, he remained steadfast in his devotion, offering spiritual guidance to fellow prisoners. He died in the prison of Pitesti, a place of horrific re-education experiments, thus becoming a martyr for the church.
