In 1918, with Bessarabia uniting with Romania, Fr. Alexandru was elected to the Bessarabian Council, advocating for the union. His strong stance against Soviet ideology led to his arrest in 1919 by the Bolsheviks in Tighina. He was tortured and martyred for refusing to renounce his faith and bless the Soviet regime. Before his death, he prayed for his persecutors.
