Stephen the Great, the ruler of Moldavia, vowed to build a church for every battle he won. After a victory against the Ottomans at the Battle of Vaslui in 1475, considered one of the largest defeats of the Ottoman Empire, he vowed to build a church in honor of St. George. He kept his promise, constructing the majestic Voroneț Monastery, famous for its vibrant frescoes, including a striking Last Judgment on the exterior.
