Stephen, outnumbered, masterfully chose the battlefield, a marshy area unsuitable for the Ottoman cavalry. Using strategic ambushes and relentless attacks, Stephen's army decimated the invaders. The victory echoed throughout Europe, Pope Sixtus IV titled him "Athlete of Christ" for defending Christendom.
