In Nazareth, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph, announcing she would conceive a son through the Holy Spirit, to be named Jesus, who would reign over the house of Jacob forever. Though perplexed, Mary humbly accepted, declaring herself the Lord's servant. She visited her cousin Elizabeth, who recognized Mary as the mother of her Lord, and Mary proclaimed the Magnificat, praising God.
