Tradition tells that Andrew, after Pentecost, traveled to Scythia, now Romania, and preached the Gospel. He established the first Christian communities here. Facing persecution, he was crucified on an X-shaped cross. The story goes that while on the cross, he continued to preach and asked not to be untied, considering himself unworthy to die like his Lord.
