Venerable John, a simple shepherd, was captured by Tatars. Refusing to renounce his Christian faith for riches and status, he endured horrific tortures. He was dragged behind a horse until he died, his body left in the field. A divine light shone upon his relics, untouched by beasts, and his body was later moved to Prislop Monastery.
